Eighth Continent;;
...a bird role play
...a bird role play
For centuries they lived as any other animal, living as harmoniously as one could in such a harsh world. As time passed through the world, a new race emerged. They were man, tall and featherless. At first they were no threat, but slowly they became dominant. They learned to hunt the birds, for sport or survival, for mere pets or man's belly.
But what could the birds have done? They were nothing compared to man, only specks on in a vast world among giant blots of darkness.
During this time, unbeknownst to the birds or even man, something was happening. A massive earthquake shook the bottom of the world, causing a small piece of brittle ice to break away. It shifted slowly to a small nook between Antarctica and Australia, and the ice slowly melted in the warmer climate. Eventually, plants began to sprout and insects thrived in the uninhabited land.
The birds were visited by their ancestors, and told to fly guided by the stars and sun. Following their dreams, they managed to migrate to this strange new land. Again their ancestors spoke to them, and told them to call it the Skyplace. They showed them to hunt and survive in new ways, even among those who were not of their species. They came to be called Skyflock, for they were the birds who flew across the stars endlessly until the end of time.
At one point, a small band of naturalist scientists discovered the what the birds called the Skyplace, but the humans called it the Eighth Continent. They could have taken this land and built their nests, continuing to terrorize the birds. However, being environmentalists, they left it alone and told no one else about it, amazed at the fact that none of the animals were afraid of them. They introduced prey such as rabbits and squirrels to give the inhabitants a boost, and left bearing the secret of the Eighth Continent.
The birds thrived. Culture evolved from daily tasks and ways of life, battles for territory were fought, and alliances shifted in the blink of an eye. But through it all flew five flocks, who christened themselves as the beasts of legend, the lords of the Skyplace.
Fireflock, those shadowed by the bog called Mirefield;
Sandflock, the ones living above golden sands;
Poolflock, a band of fish hunters;
Treeflock, the forest-dwellers;
and Lowflock, mountain birds who patrol the canyon skies.
