Edward made a promise to Bella one night as she sat in her hospital bed, broken and upset so long ago. He promised her that he would stay with her as long as it was safe for her. And he intends to stick to that promise. It has been months since the vampire nomad James was killed, and Bella is still feeling the more long term effects of his attack. Edward's paranoia.
He can't stand the thought of her being in danger, or getting hurt. He especially can't stand the thought of being the reason that she is in danger. It is on Bella's eighteenth birthday that everything goes down hill. She cuts her finger on the wrapping of one of her presents, and Jasper, not able to help himself, tries to attack her. Edward immediately takes her home, and for the next week he acts in ways that frighten Bella.
Edward takes Bella into the woods, wanting to talk to her. He makes sure to keep close to her house as he delivers the news of his departure. She doesn't take it well, she doesn't want Edward to leave her, she doesn't care if she is in danger. She wants him to stay, or she wants to at least go with him.
Bella, I don’t want you to come with me.
You… don’t… want me?
....It will be as if I’d never existed.
When he'd gone Bella tried following him, though she knew that it really was no use. Edward was gone. She spent the rest of the night, and the next day and night lost in the deep forest. When she was found she was in a state of total and complete shock- she was almost catatonic. Her broken.
Edward went back to his family, ready to make them leave. Rose, and Jasper were the only ones ready and willing to leave. The rest of the family refused. They knew that this was what Edward wanted- to leave and let Bella be safe. They just couldn't leave. This was their home, and Bella was already apart of their family. So frustrated, and alone Edward left. He traveled, tracking Victoria and kept regular tabs on both his family and Bella- even if it hurt. He made sure that they had almost no contact with her. He didn't know though that Alice, and Emmett regularly broke his rules.
They visited Bella constantly, unwilling to let her suffer. They just couldn't do it to her. Rose was furious, and Jasper refused to go near the human, while Esme and Carlisle tried to stay away from her. It hurt them both, as they loved her, but they knew that for Edward's sanity they should try. With the family torn, and Bella broken things are a mess.
Bella's friend Jacob Black, and his friends have been acting more unusual as of late, and Bella finds out the reason. An unknown, and dangerous vampire is staking out their home and killing all who it can get a hold of. A group of boys from the reservation have been experiencing odd developments, and sticking to themselves. When Bella finds out what it is, that they've become wolf shape shifters, she doesn't know what to do.
She is torn, Alice and Emmett refuse to leave her side, and she can't bring herself to leave them so it is almost impossible for her to visit her friends in La Push. Jake is furious at the vampires, and fights to see his friend, but she won't leave the ones that remind her so much of the boy she lost.
When Bella doesn't think that things can get anymore confusing, here enters the mysterious vampire: Victoria. Back and ready for revenge. She plans to take Bella, and do one of two things to her. Permanently take her life, breaking Edward's heart. Or worse, she plans to take her human life and give her a new and more... venomous one. She wants to change Bella into a vampire- permanently tearing the girl's vampire lover to pieces.
Edward isn't far behind Victoria, he manages to track her back to Forks after five months of being gone from Forks. He wants to warn his family, he wants to save Bella but he is at a loss. He doesn't want to go near her, and he doesn't want to hurt her. But he has to save her. He decides to stick to the shadows, and be her silent protector. It is only when he sees her with the wolf, Jacob, that he can't control himself.
